ROBERT LOVETT JR. POLITICAL FIGURES SERIES
Sometime in the 1860's Robert Lovett Jr. produced a series of medalets featuring four well known American political figures - George Washington, Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, and William Henry Harrison. DeWitt states the following number of sets were struck in proof: silver 10, copper 25, brass 25, white metal 25. The obverse dies were muled with each other as well as being found muled with various dies of George H. Lovett's. The Clay, Jackson, and Harrison Medalets are listed in the non-contemporary section of DeWitt; the Washington piece is listed as B158 in Baker but is attributed to Bale and Smith because of a similarity to the Atwood Hotel token. Because of the pairing of the Washington equestrian die with the others in the series I think there is no doubt it was struck by Robert Lovett Jr. as part of this series. |

DeWitt list a lead version of the Jackson medal but says nothing about the number struck; I have no record of this piece. Could it have been a trial piece? |
Various Mules
The
obverses of the four medalets were combined with each other to produce
these mules. DeWitt states that 5 proof sets were struck in each metal
(silver, copper, brass, and white metal). And George H. used these
obverse dies, as well as the Washington Equestrian reverse die, in combination with the second obverse die from his
Headquarters Series to produce 5 in each metal also

Neither Musante nor Rulau/Fuld list the brass or white metal versions, and
there is no mention of these in Sullivan as they are not campaign pieces,
but I would assume these were also struck as part of this series.
