1862 Union League Medalets

DeWitt U 1862-4, white metal, 31.15mm

The first Union League, of Philadelphia, was organized on December 27th, 1862 at the home of Dr. J. Forsythe Meigs. This, and other Union Leagues that followed, were patriotic societies dedicated to supporting Abraham Lincoln and his efforts to suppress the rebellion by the Confederate States. There was a Union League in Lancaster, it's first president being Dr. Frederick A. Muhlenberg.
The Society is still in existence in Philadelphia, with membership being very exclusive - serving more as a country club than a political organization.

The preceding two medalets are mulings of the Union League die with the Penn's Treaty die from his Historical Series.

Union League / City Hall Mule, copper, 31mm

This a muling of Robert's die with his brother's, George H., die for a Sage Historical medal. This combintion is not listed in Sullivan but Bowers has an extensive description of this piece in his "American Numismatics Before The Civil War". He calls it very rare.
The pair of dies for this were in a Thomas Elder sale in 1909. Elder did use some of George H's dies to restrike pieces so this muling may have been done by him and not one of the Lovett's.

Union League / City Hall Mule, gilt overstruck on a U.S Centennial
medal H-K 22, 31mm
This is such a fascinating piece! Someone (George H.? Thomas Elder?) obtained a gilt example of a Centennial medal, cut it down to 31mm, then used it as the planchet to strike this muling. The undertype can clearly be seen through the restrike design. Bowers did not seem to be aware of this piece as it is not listed in his "American Numismatics Before The Civil War". Very likely unique.

Non-contemporary W.H. Harrison Political medalet

Although very similar to the medalets created for Harrison's 1840
campaign these were probably struck sometime in the early 1860's.

DeWitt WHH 1840-99, white metal or lead?, glass, 43mm

This second example has no evidence of enamel and although the
two pieces of glasses are easily rotated within the encasement, and
from each other, it does not appear they have ever been removed.

Sullivan list this piece as an 1840 product but the design does not match
any of the medals produced for this campaign. On close examination I
believe it is Robert Jr's design for the non-contemporary Harrison medal
and so would date from the 1860's. This would not have been produced
directly from the dies or the images would be reversed. The
impressions in the glass must have been made from medals
themselves or impressions from the dies.

Both dies were muled with the two dies of the Unity of Government
medal (GW-432) as well as Robert Jr's Sabbath School Jubilee die.
And the Sunday School Jubilee die was muled with the Liberty and
Independence die but are not found in either DeWitt, Musante, or Baker.
